Trama:La storia si svolge nel quartiere Ueno di Tokyo dove vivono i sette fratelli Ischu orfani di genitori che, poverissimi ma orgogliosi, spesso rifiutano l’aiuto economico del ricchissimo nonno preferendo fare qualche lavoretto a tempo parziale per guadagnarsi ciò che gli serve.
I sette giovani erano cresciuti fino a poco tempo prima felicemente supportati dall’amore e cura dei loro genitori: in segno di gratitudine i bambini regalano alla coppia un biglietto vinto alla lotteria per un viaggio turistico in Hokkaido, per festeggiare il loro anniversario di matrimonio. Quest’atto spontaneo e sincero provoca però una terribile disgrazia, in quanto rimangono coinvolti in un incidente aereo: i loro corpi non vengono ritrovati e neppure segnalati come dispersi.
Anche se questa risulta essere certamente una tragedia davvero scioccante per i giovani, non si lasciano travolgere ed abbandonare alla disperazione: debbono piuttosto unire le loro forze per riuscire a stare in piedi autonomamente con le proprie gambe senza l’aiuto di nessun adulto, senza dover dipendere da nessun altro. Saranno tenuti a guadagnarsi da vivere da se stessi.
