Trama:Ambientata nel futuro, nella città di Heartland, la storia si concentra su Yuma Tsukumo, un giovane duellante che mira a diventare il campione assoluto di Duel Monsters. Un giorno, durante un duello con Shark, il bullo della scuola, un misterioso spirito di nome Astral lo aiuta a vincere. Astral spiega a Yuma che sta cercando di recuperare la memoria perduta, trasformata nelle carte di 99 mostri Xyz chiamati Mostri Numero. I Mostri Numero hanno il potere di prendere il controllo del duellante che li usa e far emergere il suo lato oscuro. Per recuperare le 99 carte, Astral e Yuma fanno squadra e, dopo l’incontro con il Cacciatore di Numeri Kite Tenjo, ottengono l’abilità di fondersi in un’unica entità tramite il potere Zexal. Partecipando in seguito al Carnevale Mondiale di Duelli, Yuma affronta diversi avversari, tra i quali Tron e Dottor Faker, che vogliono i Numeri per perseguire i propri scopi personali.
Il protagonista principale, è un ragazzo un po’ maldestro, allegro ed energico, sottovalutato a scuola e nei duelli, ma che accetta sempre ogni sfida e non si arrende mai: questo comportamento è da lui chiamato “Kattobing”, tradotto in italiano con l’espressione “energia al massimo!”. Il suo sogno è diventare un campione di Duel Monsters. Qualsiasi cosa succeda ad Astral lui lo aiuta sempre. Indossa una chiave speciale datagli dai suoi genitori, attualmente in viaggio per degli scavi archeologici, che permette di aprire la porta verso la Dimensione Astrale, nella quale incontra Astral. Vive con la sorella maggiore Kari e la nonna; utilizza un deck con mostri Gagaga datogli da suo padre, nonostante Kari sia inizialmente contraria alla sua partecipazione ai duelli. La sua carta più importante è Numero 39: Utopia, datagli da Astral durante il suo duello contro Shark nell’episodio 1, che si evolve in Numero C39: Raggio Utopia durante il duello contro Fortuno. Nel corso del tempo, Yuma inizia ad avere più padronanza del suo deck e riesce a vincere i duelli più facilmente; ottiene presto anche il potere Zexal, che gli permette di fondere la sua anima con quella di Astral e di rafforzare Raggio Utopia con la Zexal Weapon. Partecipa successivamente al Carnevale Mondiale di Duelli, riuscendo ad arrivare alle finali e vincere. Nella seconda serie, Utopia subisce molte altre trasformazioni; inoltre, Yuma ottiene un nuovo potere Zexal. Nel manga, Yuma riesce a creare il mostro Numero S39: Utopia One con l’aiuto di Astral, Kite e Shark.
